Paleo Crockpot Jambalaya Soup

This recipe was my guest post over at Food Renegade last year but I figured I’d re-post it here at the tailend of this winter and right before Mardis Gras!

It was originally inspired by my husband’s cold. Nothing clears the sinuses quite like a spicy jambalaya. This version is quite spicy but can be altered to your tastes by lowering the amount of hot sauce or using a less spicy sausage. I used this beautiful organic nitrate/hormone-free spicy Andouille I got from my local supermarket.

I also used four peppers – green, red, orange and yellow and cut them coarsely. They look so pretty and fresh!

  1. This really does sound absolutely delicious. Love the idea of cauliflower rice in a jambalaya. And I must locate that sausage. I adore andouille and it’s hard to find, much less organic.

    Looks great…when do you add the okra? I’ve cooked dishes with it before and I know if it’s cooked too long it falls apart. Probably when you add in the sausage 30 mins before? Thanks!!

    If we sub the shrimp for scallop would it make a huge difference or is there something else I could use…. my husband is allergic to shrimp :/

    Hi, I’m wanting to make this for my husband’s birthday party this weekend. I’ve looked, but I can’t see where it says how many servings for this recipe?

      It makes a whole crockpot full! I’d say 10 servings.

    I roasted a chicken in the crock the night before, and then made this without the shrimp or sausage because my wife won’t it those. Amazingly without the shrimp or the sausage or the okra this was amazing. I even cut out 1 cup of the broth in exchange fore water.

    Note: I made the homemade chili pepper and I recommend you do the same. Also, I left out the cauliflower rice and did it on the side, so some people in my family could choose regular rice and I could eat paleo. I would do the same. Cook the cauliflower on the stove and add it later or your jambalaya could end up tasting like cabbage.

  12. I made this a few months ago and absolutely adored it. I froze it in large muffin cups, so I can heat it up one bowl at a time. Amazing. Thanks for sharing!

      Did you just freeze it right in the metal pan and they popped out easily or what did you use to help them pop out to store?

    This was awesome. My non-paleo friends and my family all loved it. I addedseveral tbsp. of extra-hot sauce to get a kick. I also didn’t have enough okra so i subbed celery ofr about 1/2 cup of that, which made it better. Didn’t add plain chicken in atthe beginning, turned out fine (seriously though, 4 oz. chicken? That won’t make a difference, why bother?). Everyone thought it actually contained rice, even my taste buds. Anyone reading this, you have to add the cauliflower rice in, it makes it significantly better, like the real thing. I think this was the first food i’ve eaten for at least a week without adding seasonings and spice to it at hte table, it’s just that good. Only proglem is it’s a watery soup, so you just got to eat a bit more to feel satisfied and get enough protein.

    It’s unclear if the chicken is supposed to be cooked up front, and if so, how. Same goes for the sausages, it would be great to clarify this.

    My assumption, is that both need to be cooked up front.

    I’ve decided to poach the chicken and boil the sausage in it’s casing and then slice for the soup after chilling.

    I hope that works :)

      I used uncooked chicken as it will cook during the 6 hours, and i used pre cooked sausge, and added the tomatoes in the beginning and it all turned out great!

    Just made this and it was a hit!! Some people are asking about tomatoes, I added mine when I put chicken stock in. My crock pot is too small so I made it stove top all day on a simmer, was Delish and spicy! My husband loved it as well.

    I made this and loved it! So easy and so tasty. I substituted double the shrimp and some crab for the chicken and just added all the meat in the last 30 minutes. I thought it might be too spicy, but once I added the meat it evened out. Love the cauliflower in place of the rice.

    I know how to cook so it works, but this recipe’s instructions are terrible. Just saying…. If I was a novice I’d be screwed. But good for inspiration!

      I don’t want a runny soup, so what are some of your suggestions? Do we use a 28oz can? I think 5 cups of stock is a bit much, perhaps reduce it to maybe 4? Whenever I make this I will not add any cauliflower rice because my family won’t like it. I’m dealing with picky eaters.
